FAA Training Courses

Gulf Coast Flight Training Center is the only FAA Approved Flight School in south Mississippi offering both types of FAA training: FAR Part 61 and FAR Part 141.

The main differences are that students who enroll in Part 141 training must be able to train at least once a week. The course operates within a structured environment and under specific flight training & academic lessons.

Part 61 training enables students to progress through the various courses at their own pace, although still within a structured program.

We recommend that for a person who wishes to begin a career in aviation and has zero hours to enroll in Part 141 training. Also because of the intensity with which this program operates, there are reduced flight experience requirements for Part 141 training. This enables graduation with fewer total hours than Part 61 requirements.

For further details about these two flight training programs please call and speak with a member of staff so that we can advise you of your best options.

Please see below the various courses we offer both under Part 61 and Part 141 and the main differences between the two programs:

FAR Part 61 Courses

  • Private Pilot Certificate

  • Commercial Pilot Certificate

  • Airline Transport Pilot Certificate

Add on Ratings:

  • Instrument Rating

FAR Part 141 Courses

  • Private Pilot Certificate

  • Commercial Pilot Certificate

Add on Ratings:

  • Instrument Rating

  • Certified Flight Instructor (CFI)

  • Certified Flight Instrument Instructor (CFII)

Main differences in flight experience between Part 141 training versus Part 61 training:

TT: Total Time
Private Pilot Part 141 Part 61
(which includes:) 35 hours TT

5 hours solo

3 hours solo cross country

40 hours TT

10 hours solo

5 hours solo cross county

Instrument Rating PIC cross country N/A 50 hours PIC cross country
Commercial Pilot  190 hours TT 250 hours TT

The above represents the minimum requirements as per FAA regulations.

Be-A-Pilot Introductory Flight

For only $59 you can experience the thrill of flight.  During this introductory flight you will spend 30 minutes in one of our training aircraft with an experienced FAA certificated instructor.  During this flight you will be given the opportunity to actually take the controls of the airplane.  It's a thrilling way to see if flying is the thing for you!

For more information see the Be-A-Pilot website or contact us.

The following is an outline of the basic requirements for Part 61 training.

Private Pilot Course

A Private Pilot can fly passengers into most airports under safe weather conditions day or night with passengers.  Federal regulations require the following:*

  • Minimum age of 17 years
  • Ground instruction covering specific aeronautical subjects
  • Pass FAA knowledge test (minimum grade 70%)
  • Pass a third-class pilot medical examination before solo flight
  • Log at least 40 hours total flight time, including:
    A) At least 20 hours instruction (3 hours cross-country, 3 hours night, 3 hours instrument, and 3 hours test preparation)
    B) At least 10 hours solo (including at least 5 hours cross-country)

* For more information visit the FAA's website or call for details.

Part 61 students are commonly graduating between 3-6 months depending upon the intensity of the flight training.

Part 141 students are expected to graduate between 6-8 weeks. For an estimate on our FAR 141 course please call for details.

Instrument Rating Course

An instrument rating is an extension of your Private or Commercial and allows you to fly the aircraft solely with reference to the instruments.  Federal regulations require the following:*

  • At least 50 hours of cross-country time as pilot-in-command

  • A total of 40 hours of actual or simulated instrument time

* For more information visit the FAA's website or call for details.

Commercial Pilot License

This license is much like a Private Pilot license except a Commercial license is required for a pilot who wishes to fly for hire or compensation.  Federal regulations require the following for a Commercial License:*

  • At least 250 hours of flight time as a pilot

  • 100 hours in powered aircraft, 50 in airplanes

  • 100 hours of pilot-in-command flight time

  • 20 hours of training on the areas of operation listed in FAR 61.127(b)(1)

  • 10 hours of solo flight in a single-engine airplane on the areas of operation listed in FAR 61.127(b)(1)

* For more information visit the FAA's website or call for details.

Estimates

As we've mentioned the FAA sets flight and training minimums for all certificates and ratings. Although we have shown in both types of programs the minimum requirements, we believe it would be misleading to say that everyone graduates with these hours. This is mainly due to the intensity with which students are able to train as well as their motivation and ability. Therefore please see below some cost and flight time estimates based on actual cost/times that our recent Part 61 students have graduated. The cost include minimum, equipment, books, ground instruction and exams applicable to the particular course. This we are confident will provide you with a more realistic idea on what you can expect. In any case they represent the equivalent performance necessary to achieve high marks in a higher education program.

Any additional flight or ground training, personal equipment and or materials will increase the overall course expense. The cost estimates are based on "block time" deposited in your account. FAA practical test fees are set by the FAA designated examiner and, as all prices, are subject to change.

Just some of what this includes: Total Course Estimate
Private Pilot 50 hours TT (30 hours dual and 20 hours solo) $8500-10500
Instrument Rating* 35 hours advanced instruction and 10 hours dual simulator $7500-9500
Commercial Pilot* 20 hours advanced (including complex time) and 10 hours solo $6500-7500

* Instrument students: Assume already hold a current Private or Commercial Pilot License, a current medical and already logged approximately - 5 hours instrument, 50 hours PIC cross country of which 10 hours in an airplane.

* Commercial students (ASEL): Assume already hold a valid Private Pilot License, a current medical and already logged approximately - 220 hours TT (70 in powered aircraft), 90 hours PIC (40 in airplanes), 48 hours PIC cross country (8 in airplanes)
